Matrix Home Nameless RPG

The Desert of the Real is the shattered remnant of a once-thriving human civilization. When the humans scorched the sky, they cut off the Earth's ecosystem from its primary source of power: The Sun. This was, of course, also the machine's primary source of power, and it was hoped that they would be unable to survive without it.

This misjudgment is what ultimately created the Matrix. The machines responded by turning human beings into power cells, locking them up in gigantic power plants and subjugating them with a relatively pleasant illusion. Some say that, because humans created the AI and scorched the sky, they are the true orchestrators of their own demise.

At its height, the human race numbered almost 10 billion. Their cities were mammoth, sprawling metroplexes that spanned hundreds of miles in all directions, many even blending with their neighbors. Now, these megalopolises are nothing but gutted relics littering the landscape of a barren wasteland.

Their old service tunnels, on the other hand, see much more activity. The machines build their power plants under the ground, making use of preexisting structures. Resistance ships wander the maze-like catacombs between missions, trying to evade detection. A few nomadic humans even live there, huddled around the few remaining sources of warmth.

Still, not all has been lost in the centuries of war. One human city remains, hidden deep within the Earth's crust where there is still abundant heat. Catching scraps from the machines, humans have continued advancing their science and technology. Though still little match for the machines, human devices are capable of miraculous feats, with medicine and virtual reality being the most highly developed. After all, necessity is the mother of invention.
