Nyctomancy
Nyctomancers (aka. Vigilantes, Justicars, or Dark Mages) take Evil into their souls with the sole purpose of visiting it upon the Evil themselves. In their pursuit of Justice, they often become just as tainted by Evil as those they pursue. They are often disturbed individuals driven by emotion and obsessed with revenge.
Nyctomancy blast style:
The Nyctomantic blast spells take damage done to the vigilante and redirect
it onto the attacker. The effects last as long as the caster takes no direct
action against an opponent.
Generate a minor charge:
Visit justice upon a minor Evil (neighborhood bully, theif, etc..)
Generate a significant
charge: Visit justice upon a significant Evil (murderer, rapist,
etc..)
Generate a major charge:
Visit justice upon a legendary Evil (Jack the Ripper, Hitler, etc..)
Taboo:
If a Nyctomancer ever performs Evil, especially violent, acts upon an innocent
person, she looses any and all charges she has. (The exact definitions of Evil
and innocent are left to the GM.)
Random magick domain:
Anything that helps the user confront Evil and/or turn it against itself.
Starting charges:
Starting Nyctomancers possess 4 minor charges.
Nyctomancy minor formula spells
- Bad Karma
- cost: 1 minor charge
effect: This is the Nyctomantic minor blast. It causes anyone who damages the caster to suffer that damage instead of the caster. This spell only redirects minor damage (hand-to-hand or minor blasts, for example). It lasts as long as the caster takes no direct action against anyone.
- Stare Into the Abyss
- cost: 1 minor charge
effect: This spell can be cast on any person or object the caster is touching. It allows the caster to "see" one act of Evil that the target has performed (for people) or one that the target was used in (for an object). The vision takes only one round, no matter how much time is "seen."
- This spell is often used to separate the Evil from the innocent. If the target has never performed, or been used in, an Evil Act, the caster senses that they/it are "pure." If nothing is detected because the spell failed, the caster knows that, too.
- Cloak of Darkness
- cost: 1+ minor charge
effect: The Cloak appies a +20% per charge bonus to all stealth-related actions by causing anyone who looks at her to percieve only an indistinct shadow. The effect lasts a number of rounds equal to the sum of the dice roll (like minor damage).
- The Scent of Evil
- cost: 2 minor charges
effect: This spell allows the caster to track one individual by "scent." The target must be someone who 1) has Evil on their soul, and 2) the caster has met before in person. The Scent of Evil is not erased by water or other odors, though the passage of time can impose penalties to the casting roll (GM's discretion). It lasts until the caster engages in some other activity (like combat).
- From Hell's Heart
- cost: 2 minor charges
effect: The caster unleashes the emotional force of a past trauma as a physical attack. A cloud of magical energy (usually in the shape of a large, black bird) flies from the caster's body into the target's, where it causes significant damage. Meanwhile, the caster is forced to make a rank 10 stress check (GM determines type) from reliving the traumatic event.
Nyctomancy significant formula spells
- Bad Mojo
- cost: 1 significant charge
effect: This is the Nyctomantic significant blast. It causes anyone who damages the caster to suffer that damage instead of the caster. This spell only redirects significant damage (guns or significant blasts, for example). It lasts as long as the caster takes no direct action against anyone else.
- Repent, Ye Sinner!
- cost: 1 significant charge
effect: The target of this spell is overcome with remorse for past misdeeds, anything from first dgree murder to being mean to a house cat. They must immediately make a Self stress check with a -30% penalty. If he fails, the target is racked with tears and compelled to confess his sins, as well as receiving a Failed notch in Self.
- Escape
- cost: 1 significant charge
effect: No obstacle should interfere with the administration of Justice. When this spell is cast, any locks, bonds, doors, or other moveable obstacles hindering the caster's movements spring open.
- Evil's Double-Edged Blade
- cost: 2 significant charges
effect: By taking Evil into themselves (rank 10 Self check), Nyctomancers can cancel the effects of any malignant spell or supernatural power. The only restriction is that the spell's caster or target be in the Nyctomancer's physical presence.
- Shroud of Darkness
- cost: 2 significant charges
effect: Until the next sunrise or sunset (whichever comes first), the caster is difficult to detect by magical means. Spells and natural powers both suffer a -50% penalty when used against the caster.
Nyctomancy major effects
Major Nyctomantic effects usually involve some great sacrifice to bring down a powerful Evil. A Nyctomancer locked in battle with such an Evil could use a major charge to incinerate them both, call the souls of his victims to her aid, or defy death itself for one last chance at revenge.
