Setting Up Windows 95 for
LAN Access to Sound Internet
Before your Begin
- You should read through these instructions thoroughly and print out a
copy before you continue.
- This installation procedure assumes that you have a basic working
knowledge of Windows95 and MS-DOS commands.
- You must consult with your LAN administrator before following these
instructions. They will need to supply you with your designated IP
address and gateway address.
- It is always a good idea to make a backup of any important files on
your system before installing software or making changes to your system.
- This installation will require you to have your Windows95 Setup Disks
or CD-ROM available. If Windows95 came pre-installed on your computer
your computer manufacturer should have supplied you with disks.
Remove Any Existing Internet Software
- If you are using software provided to you by Sound Internet for use
with Windows 3.1x simply delete the directory tree C:\INET. To do this
you may start an MS-DOS prompt and type:
deltree c:\inet
- If you are using a third-party Internet software package. Please
check with that software's documentation for instructions on how to
un-install the software.
- If you are currently running Windows 3.1x on your system and are
upgrading to Windows95 please be sure to delete any copies of the
WINSOCK.DLL file before you install Windows95.
- If you have already installed Windows95 you should check to make sure
that there is only one copy of WINSOCK.DLL on your hard drive.
The file should be in your C:\WINDOWS directory and should be 42,080
bytes (42K) in size with a file date of July 11, 1995 9:50am.
Install Windows 95
- If you have not already done so, install Windows 95.
- After Windows95 installation be sure to keep your Windows95 disks
handy as you will need them to install your Internet software
Install Network Capabilities Into Windows 95
Note: If Windows95 already recognizes your network card may skip
this step.
- Double click on "My Computer"
- Double click on "Control Panel"
- Double click on "Network"
- Check to see if your network card is listed in the window.
- If your network card is not listed, click 'Cancel' and then select
"Add/Remove Hardware" from the Control Panel and let Windows detect your
card.
Install and Configure TCP/IP
Set up your client.
- Double click on "My Computer".
- Double click on "Control Panel".
- Double click on "Network".
- Click "Add".
- Double click on "Client".
- Scroll down and select "Microsoft".
- Double click on "Client for Microsoft Networks". At this point, it
will ask you to select an adapter.
- Scroll down and select "Microsoft".
- Double-click on your network card's listing.
- If it takes you back to the starting screen, click "Add" again,
otherwise double-click on "Protocol".
- Scroll down and select "Microsoft".
- Double-click on "TCP/IP".
Set your computer's identification
NOTE: Check with your LAN administrator before completing these
steps:
- Click the TAB "Identification".
- Computer Name: UserID (all lower case).
- Workgroup: SCC-NET.
- Computer Description: Pentium 90 (...or whatever).
- Click "OK".
- Click "OK", again.
- Windows 95 will now copy the files from the floppy disks (or CD-ROM)
onto your hard drive. When this is finished, it will tell you that you
need to restart.
- Reboot now by clicking "YES". DO NOT simply turn off
power and turn it back on!!
- When Windows restarts it will ask for your name and password. For
name, give it your User ID (all lower case).
- Leave the password blank.
- it will ask for password verification, leave both spaces BLANK. It
will not ask for login in the future.
ConfigureTCP/IP
The default settings for "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "Dial-up
Adapter" are perfect for use with Sound Internet. TCP/IP needs to be
configured.
- Double-click on "My Computer".
- Double-click on "Control Panel".
- Double-click on "Network".
- Select "TCP/IP".
- Click on "Properties".
- Click the TAB "IP Address".
- In the avaliable blank, enter the IP address assigned to you by your
LAN administrator.
- Click the TAB "Gateway".
- In the available blank, type in the gateway address provided to you
by you LAN administrator and click "Add".
- Click the TAB "Bindings".
- Make sure "Client for Microsoft Networks" is checked.
- Click the TAB "DNS Configuration".
- Select "Enable DNS".
- Host: login-name.
- Domain: SCC.NET.
- DNS Server Search Order: 199.199.195.5.
- Click "Add".
- Click "OK"
- Click "OK", again. It will inform you that a reboot is necessary for the
changes to take affect.
- It will ask if you want to reboot now. Click "Yes".
Install Other Software from the Diskettes
Begin Installation
- Insert diskette number #1 into the floppy drive.
- Click "Start" then "Run", type "a:setup".
- Click OK The Installer Software will step you through the following
diskettes.
Install Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Insert Diskette number #3 into the floppy drive.
- Click "Start" then "Run", type "a:msie20".
- Click OK The Installer Software will step you through the installation.
