Setting up Windows 3.1x Applications for Sound Internet
These instructions assume you already have your system setup to access
Sound Internet. If not, please see Setting up
Windows 3.1x for Dialup Access to Sound Internet.
Configuring Eudora E-Mail.
Configuring Free Agent.
- From the program manager, select the Internet group. Double click Free
Agent News Reader.
- On the Menu bar select Options, then Preferences.
- Fill in the screen with the necessary information.
- Sound Internet News Sever (news.scc.net) Does not require
Authorization login.
Getting to the internet software and briefly
what it does
All of the internet applications installed from the software (except
Internet Explorer) can be found by double clicking on the Internet Apps
program group window in your Program Manager.
Internet Explorer - World Wide Web
Explorer is a web browser made by Microsoft Corporation. This is the
application you will want to use to surf the World Wide Web. The first
time you open it, you will most likely go to Microsofts web page. To get
to our web page, delete the http: . Address in the "Location" bar window
on the top of the application, and type http://www.scc.net to visit our
home page. *(Optional: To make our home page be the starting point rather
than Microsoft, from the "View" menu, select "Options", then click the
"Navigation" tab and click "Use Current".) From our home page, you can
visit the search engines youve heard about. Just click on the pictures or
links (underlined text) to go there. This is where internet is point and
click with a graphical interface. If you want to make a web page, your
web address will ultimately be at: http://www.scc.net/~username
Eudora - eMail
- Open the Eudora application
- Select "Special", then "Configuration"
- For "POPAccount" type your -- login@scc.net --(Hint: Login and
username are the same)
- Enter your real name (Optional)
- For "SMTP Server" type -- smtp.scc.net (if it is not already there
for you)
- For "Pop Server" type -- pop3.scc.net (if it is not already there for
you)
- For "Return Address" type login@scc.net
- Click "OK"
- To check mail, from "File" menu select "Check Mail"
- You will be prompted for your password use the one you made when you
started the account.
- To send a message, click the "Message" menu, then "New
Message"
- Enter the address of the person you are sending mail to
- Enter the subject of the message
- Type the message in the body
- Click "Send"
Free Agent - Internet News
- From "Options" select "Preferences" then "User Profile" (if not
already open)
- Fill in the general information which you should know by now
- Click the "System Profile" tab and type in news.scc.net and
mail.scc.net in the appropriate fields if it is not already done for you
and click "OK" , then "OK" again to exit the preferences window
- Select "Online" from the menu, then "Refresh Groups list", click "OK"
to the message and wait
- After all the groups have been found, from the "All Groups" window on
the left of your screen, scroll through the list and double click on the
ones that interest you to open up a listing of the postings they contain.
Click "Top 50" for a sample of the newsgroups (as some have hundreds),
click "All" for all articles, "Subscribe" to custom create news that youll
read often, or "Cancel" to exit the window.
- Subscribing to newsgroups will prevent you from having to go through
the long list of groups to find one you use frequently. To check for your
custom group listing the next time you use the program, from the "Group"
menu, select "Show Only Subscribed Groups"
Telnet - logging in to remote
computers
This is the program you use to change your password and to access bulletin
boards like ISCA and to set up your WWW pages. We will discuss your
password here.
- To change password, open the "Telnet" application. Open a connection
to "Sound Internet", you should have our setup as an option, otherwise
open a connection to scc.net
- It will prompt you for your "username", then "password" - fill them in
- To change your password type passwd after the scc:~$ prompt and
follow the steps it asks you. For security purposes, you should choose
secure passwords and change them semi-often. Use a combination of numbers
and letters, never use real words.
- When you are finished, type exit to quit your session. Always do this
before exiting the application itself.
- To learn more about UNIX, consult your internet help book for
references on UNIX related material.
WS_ FTP - File Transfer Protocol
Use this to upload and download data files across the internet. The WWW
has taken away much of the need for using ftp. You would use ftp to
upload a web page. By the time you get to that, you'll probably already
know how to use ftp. Otherwise, this isn't a program youll find
entertaining.
Gopher - Online Database
Search/View
A program developed by the University of Minnesota for the purpose of
connecting educational libraries and online directories for students and
staff. Not used often anymore, but included just in case.
Lview - View Pictures
Lview is an application that will open the .gif and .jpg images that you
may come across once on the internet. To open the image, first open the
Lview program, then find and select the .gif or .jpg image you want to
view.
