Mac Software
For the absolute NEWEST version of FreePPP that works with both Open Transport Macs and non-Open Transport Macs (i.e. MacTCP and TCP/IP) Click HERE for instructions. We are now distributing the version of FreePPP that you see in the sw directory. It seems to be a very stable program and is easy to install. It also has some pretty cool features that I am sure you'll like. If you have problems, call me in the office during the day 651-999-0999 9:00-6:00, but please try first on your own using the instructions I wrote. I am always interested in hearing your comments or suggestions on improving the help guides. Good luck!
Sound InternetMacintosh Internet Setup Guide Contents:
II. Working with .sea, .hqx and installer files III. Installing PPP and MacTCP IV. Configuring the Internet Software
I. Where to put the files-ConfigPPP and MacTCP need to go into the Control Panels folder located inside the System folder on your hard drive.
II. Working with .sea (self-extracting archives), installer files and .hqx files
Self extracting archives (.sea extension files) are compressed forms of
data designed for space efficiency. To extract the contents of all the
.sea files, double click on its icon which should now be in the Internet
Folder on your hard drive. Click Continue when prompted, then press
enter to save the compressed file into the Internet Folder. When you
have finished extracting all of the files in the Internet Folder that end
with the .sea extension, you can drag all of the .sea files to the trash
and delete them as they are no longer needed.
Installer programs are also a compressed file designed to install the
program and its contents to the right place on your hard drive. Two of
the files in this software package are designed to do just that- Internet
Explorer Installer and Fetch 3.0.1 Installer. To install these programs
onto your hard drive, double click on their icons and proceed with the
installation. You should choose to custom install rather than easy
install. That way, you can install the proper program for whichever
platform your computer is based. Most older Macs use a 68k processor,
while most new models are Power Macs. A Fat (Binary) program will run on
both PowerPC and 68k Macs. Select all the other options after choosing
what type of Mac you have. When they are done installing, you can drag
the installer icons to the trash and delete them (remember that you have
all of these files backed-up for you on the internet floppy disks from us).
In order to decompress .hqx files, you need to have an expander utility
such as Stuffit Deluxe, Stuffit Lite, or many other utility programs. If
you have software from a commercial service as America Online, you can
also open most types of compressed files with the AOL software. The
decompress utilities are built into the program. To decompress the files
using this software, open the AOL application. From the File menu select
Open. Then locate the file you have downloaded and select it. Press the
Open or OK button to expand the file.
III. Installing and Configuring PPP and MacTCP
For installing and configuring ConfigPPP and MacTCP, you will need to
open them from within the Control Panel folder located in the System
Folder of your Macintosh.
First, open up the ConfigPPP control panel to this screen.
If the PPP Server field does NOT say Sound Internet already, click on the
New button and type in Sound Internet. Chances are if you recieved our
software, this is pre-configured for you.
When the software is up and running (after all of the software programs
and controls are configured), the above window is the ÔcontrolÕ you will
use to connect and disconnect from the internet. Clicking Open and Close
are the buttons which do just that. Once a session is open, all internet
programs are ready for use. When you are finished and ready to
disconnect, choose Close to hang up. You may want to make an alias of
the ConfigPPP control panel icon and put it on your desktop or inside
your Internet Folder. To make an alias of a program, document, control,
etc., click once on its icon to select it, then choose Make Alias from
the File menu on the top of your screen. Then you can drag the alias of
the program to wherever you want on your hard drive. Double-clicking on
the alias icon will automatically find the original program the alias
was named after and open it.
Next, click on the Config... button to get this screen.
The PPP Server Name: should read SCC net, or Sound Internet.
The Port Speed pop up screen should read 57600 if you use a 28.8 modem.
For all other modem speeds, enter the baud speed from the pop up.
Consult the manual that came with your modem to find out which speed it
is if you do not know.
Next enter the Phone num and Modem Init information. The modem init in
this manual should work on most modems. For best results, refer to your
modem manual for suggestions on which modem initiation string works best
for that particular modem. Adding M0 (where 0 is zero) to the end of the
Modem Init information will automatically disable the modemÕs speaker so
that you will not hear the squelching noise the modem makes as it
connects to our modems. You can add it or remove it from the end of your
string- depending on your own preference.
Next, click on the Connect Script button to get the window below. Check
to make sure everything is configured right. In the your username and
your password fields, type your specific username and password. This
screen should resemble the one below in all other respects. When this os
finished, click OK to go back to the previous screen.
Click OK to exit this screen. Then click Done to exit the previous
screen. From this point, your PPP should be configured correctly.
Now you can close out the ConfigPPP window by choosing Close from the
File option in the top menu of your screen.
Next, locate the MacTCP control panel and open it to this screen.
Make sure that PPP is selected. If it does not show up as an option, you
may need to restart your computer first before being able to select PPP.
Now click on the More button to get the following screen.
IV. Configuring the Internet Software
Each of the software programs has its own preferences or profile that
need to be configured with your personal information. It is important to
read all of the accompanying information that comes with the internet
programs to learn how to best use and configure the application. A few
of the programs need our information as well. The following is the
information you may need from us.
SMTP Mail server (for Eudora and some web browsers): scc.net POP Account (Eudora Settings) : username@scc.net POP Mail server : scc.net Web Server : www.scc.net Your web Homepage : http://www.scc.net/~username Your email address : username@scc.net Dial up number : 651-556-6556 DNS : 199.199.195.5 Gateway Address : 1.1.1.1 Configuring Eudora EmailOpen up the Eudora mail program by double clicking on its icon. From the Special option on the top menu screen, scroll down to Settings to get the following screen. Fill them out with your user information as it is done here. Where username would be your name on our system. For instance, kurt@scc.net. Fill out the information for the 1, 2 and 3 setting selections as shown. Everything else should be already pre-configured for you. This is all you will need to enter. Configuring NewsWatcher News ProgramLocate the NewsWatcher program and open it by double clicking on its icon. From the File menu on the top of your screen, scroll down to the Preferences option and open it. Where you see Topic: click your mouse on the box to the right to pull up a pop up menu and select Server Addresses. Fill in the information as it is below. The only other options you should or can configure would be those that ask for your real name, organization, signature (optional), email address and reply to information. you can get by with just configuring this option. The rest should be left alone. Please note that the first time you run NewsWatcher, the program will need to download a full group list of internet newsgroups. Because their are thousands, expect this download to take awhile. To get the most out of this and other internet programs. I highly recommend reading all the documentation they provide, or purchasing an internet help book. Enjoy your internetting!! *To get further information on how to get the most out of these internet application programs, read the accompanying information provided with the software. We also recommend purchasing Internet for Macs for Dummies by Charles Seiter available at many bookstores for around $19.95. We are not able to provide detailed instructions as it would take writing a book to do so. |
