one day you will step outside your apartment and feel that things aren't quite right. your neighbors are clean and polite, but you've never really talked to them...in fact, the only way you even know their last name is from their mailbox. when you go to work, everything seems strange. you feel uncomfortable...your co-workers too busy, too quiet. do you even know who these people are? chances are, you don't. chances are, they're not even human.
the creatures known only as "bee people" look just like you and me but that's where the similarity ends. bee people are humorless creatures that plant themselves in human society and gradually take over. they are not violent (unless provoked)...subtlety and relentlessness are their weapons. any structure that houses or employs more than a few hundred people becomes a prime target for their "cause." first, a lone female (the queen) is sent to establish herself in an apartment or office. she will pay her bills on time, keep to herself, work hard, arrive early and stay late. she will appear to be the model worker and the model tenant. soon after, another woman will be hired. another man will move into the building. they too are model citizens: never complaining, never loud, always busy and hard-working. this will continue for some time, more and more strange people (who all bear a certain resemblence to one another) will get hired at the office building. the queen will have moved up in the company thanks to the efforts of her newly hired "associates." eventually, the other tenants or workers will leave, either through their own volition or through subtle "pushes" by the other residents. the colony will have been established and the queen will leave to create a new hive for her people.
bee people always closely resemble one another -- hair, eye and skin color are the same as the queen in charge of that hive. bee people, especially the queen, tend to be pleasant-looking, even attractive, and all are in good physical health. they are quiet and can work for long stretches of time without eating or resting. they keep to themselves, need no obvious managing and perform tasks with a high degree of skill and competence. in short, the perfect worker. in housing situations, the will try to situate themselves at the top of the building and slowly work their way down. their rent is always paid in full, usually early, and they never complain or give reason for others to complain about them. the perfect tenant.
bee queens give off scents called pheromones that they use to communicate with workers. using these pheromones, queens can call workers to the new hive from distant locales, as well as silently direct their activities once they are within the colony. because of this olfactory communication, their plans to take over are difficult to detect. in fact, because of their generally pleasant and hard-working nature, managers tend to let them go about their business and promote them with greater frequency than their human colleagues.
bee people are usually non-aggressive, preferring things such as office gossip, sabotage and rumor-mongering to help establish a "pure" colony. however if the need arises, the normally peaceful bee people can turn violent and brutal, using whatever is at hand to maim and kill their enemies. bee people are as efficient at removing threats to the colony as they are in securing their place within in. such violent action is always instigated by the bee queen and will cease if she is slain or otherwise removed from the hive. killing a bee queen will render her workers confused and disoriented for awhile but eventually they will catch the scent of another queen and move on to be with her.
queensnote: queens can use their pheromones to call workers, as well as for other non-verbal communication. they may make all social interaction rolls at a +30% shift (as long as their target is talking to them face to face). these phermones are absorbed through the skin as well as through breathing so the only way to nullify the queen's seductive scent is by wearing a full biohazard suit (not normally thought to be office attire).
